Here are the considerations.
Patzcuaro
Patzcuaro is rather a small town but it is very busy. Packed full of people and activities. There are about 300 expats living here and most are from Europe.
It is really necessary to speak Spanish here because most of the local people speak only Spanish.
Rent can be on the high side unless you are connected with the locals and speak Spanish.
The congestion on the streets - walking or driving - is too much for Ken to handle. There are too many activities going on for Ken to process all of the people, the noise, the congestion...and on. It is just too much for him. So we do have to move.
The area is beautiful but the winter is cold and it is a damp cold because of the lake.
Major hospital is 45 minutes from area and there are lots of small type hospitals in the area.
Lots of road closures and lots of federal cops always checking the area for drugs. I do not think that crime here is bad but it is here.
American products are unknown here as well as food in most restaurants.
Chapala area.
Now when we lived in the Lake Chapala area Ken was very comfortable.
The area consists of small villages and each village has its own little town..using the term town loosely.
There were some drug gangs there and some related violence when we live there.
The weather can be rather humid during the hot season and that is a concern for me.
There are about 12,000 expats living there and most everyone speaks English. Spanish is not necessary, although you would do better with knowing the language.
Lots of wonderful restaurants and American food is very available.
Major hospital is 45 minutes away.
Rent and real estate is high, regardless of who you know.
Morelia
Major city, major shops and restaurants, major entertainment, zoo's parks, museums you name it Morelia has it and it is pure class all the way.
Spanish would be helpful but there are a lot of people there speaking English. Not sure how many expats live there but that is not really an issue for the area.
Weather is not as cold as Patzcuaro but similar.
Rent is very reasonable.
San Miguel
I have not been there yet. This is what I have found out about the area;
No violence, the drug traffic has no reason to be there.
No Major city close to it and it is off by itself.
Real Estate is high but possible, rent is high but possible.
Houses are very colonial and meet our needs very nicely.
Weather has the least humidity and close to Santa Fe New Mexico in the states.
Cold in the winter time.
So it is time for us to visit San Miguel and see what we think. We have traveled and lived in many places to see what the different area's are like. We will stay in Mexico and not return to the United States. Having looked and lived in so many states in Mexico, hopefully has helped us in making a decision where to settle down and make a home. Of course money will always be an issue but hopefully we will be able to afford something to own and call our home.
