NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT AN ADVENTURE

Today was just a very interesting day.  Let me tell you all about it.  First I went to a friends home and asked him to phone about 12 different numbers of places for rent in Morelia.  I wanted him to speak Spanish to the owners for me.  We had a lovely visit with him but we did not have much luck with the rentals.

Then I was to met this man at the grand central plaza this evening.  I did not know what to expect.  I also did not know what time to met him because he was driving from a different area to here just to met with me.

I assumed that why this man wanted to met me was because he is doing a research paper for the university that he teaches at about how expats adjust to their new land and lives.  However, I found out after he was here that the questions for the expats to answer was on line.

Ken and I went down to the plaza to wait for his phone call about when he would be in town.  As we were sitting in the plaza this horse carriage was being driving through town and around the plaza to the main church with a bride in it.  Behind the carriage was a bunch of men on horse back dressed in Spanish formal dress with big hats and they were singing.  This was the brides procession to the church.

Wow if I ever get married again I want to be driven to the church in a horse drawn carriage with a bunch of guys behind me singing.  That was really cool...

Eventually this man calls me and he is in the plaza and we met.  Well he was a lot older than I thought he would be. I thought that he would be about 50 but he was my age.

He travels all over and has been to more countries than I ever even thought of.  It was lovely to have a real good conversation with someone.  I had not realized that I really have not sat and talked with someone for hours about anything honestly interesting and intelligent since I have been in Mexico.

Mostly we have tried to be around Mexicans and the conversation has been hindered because of my lack of ability to speak their language.  While many expats disagree with me completely, I highly suggest that a person learn to speak the language of the country they are moving to. Although I will also admit that if I had stuck to that very idea myself, I probably would never have made it to Mexico.

This man (his name is Phil) now lives in Germany and we were talking about how alive Mexico makes one feel.  He made the comment that in Germany he feels old.  Everything there is old, the people that he has as friends there are older than he.  He also stated that when he comes to Mexico it feels so different.  Germany, he said is so structured and everything is done just so.  Well that is not Mexico.  There may be a structure here but darned if I can see it.

He has traveled extensively in Mexico so we talked about different area's in the country.  It was just a lovely evening and he was a lovely individual. Actually I found out during the evening that he came to face to face met with me because of my face book and web presence.  After here he will travel to a book fair in Mexico City and then on to other places for personal reasons.  So this trip was for personal/social and since he also has a book selling business - he was here on business.

One interesting concept came out of this evening and that was a web site called www.couchsurfing.org and he uses this quite a bit to find places to stay and information about traveling.  I think I will look into that site.

No pictures of the bride because I forgot the camera - sorry about that.

Hasta la proxima   (or - until next time)
