Patzcuaro is pronounced (Pahtz-Kuah-Ro) and I can not pronounce that. It is a blending of colonial and indigenous times. It is about 45 miles out of the capital city Morelia.
We have been to Morelia and the city is something else. It is a very aristocratic colonial fast moving city. It reminded me of the night life in San Cristobal de los Casas. Morelia has no blending of colonial and no indigenous influence.
The indigenous people around the lake area and on the islands on the lake are Purepecha / Tarasco people. It seems that the Purepeha people were called Tarasan by the Spanish. They were enemies of the Aztecs. The center of their empire was Lake Patzcuaro.
The people were devastated and cruelly treated by the Spanish. Later in time the church sent a priest to organized the people left around the lake into craft-oriented villages.&nbs style="font-size: 9pt;s are still doing the sa.blogspot.com/-GMi3PJeDiqQ/UDRk0wqJPyI/AAAAAAAABtM/jgrsimOOK_Y/s1600/DSCF1682.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="color: blue; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"> |
This is a carved table that they will paint any color you want . Then you put glass over the top. |
During our visit a hurricane was on the coast and we were getting some of that weather. It was cold and overcast most of the time we were there.
As with the Mayans in San Cristobal de los Casas, I noticed that the Tarazo people also put masks over their face because of cold weather.
I have been told that when the Spaniards conquered a empire, they would tear down the temples used for worship and on that site build the church and that inside each church were still stones from the temples.
