ISLAND ADVENTURE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF MEXICO

We had things to do in town today and then we planed on going by boat to the main island in the lake.  But in town we ran into some delay.  It seems that these horses were loose and just could not make up their mind where to go in front of my car.

She was not happy about me honking at her but did move along.

I should explain something about my Mexico verses the other Mexico that everyone visits.  Most visitors do not venture into the heart land of Mexico.  They visit the resorts and beaches which are beautiful and plentiful.  They will venture inland to see the temples and ruins.  But the Mexico we live in is truly the heart beat of Mexico.  There is another Mexico and that is the boarder towns where crime and uncertain personal safety is well known.  For someone who has been to Mexico they may have very different feelings for Mexico from one another.  For example in Cancun you will see the tourist Mexico and some of the things that I write about would seem almost made up to that person. For that person, they will lay in the beach, be waited upon and catered to.  In my Mexico there is road rage but it is not directed to humans only horses, cows, sheep and an occasional man on a horse in the middle of the road.

There are several islands in the lake. Janitzio is the main island and there are five others that you can visit.

           iiit.

We took the boat to Janitzio which the Indians still living on it and is
inhabited mostly by the indigenous population.  Any time there is a major traffic area - there will be people selling things and always food and music will be presented.  Where you buy tickets for the boat ride over to the island is no exception on the island and land sides of the boat docks.

The town of Janitzio which means "where it rains" is located atop the hill.  Janitzo can only be reached by boasts which run regularly back and forth from around 7 am and 9 pm.  For the people that live on the island the boat is their only connection to the mainland.

We got on the boat in late evening and the pictures are not very clear.  In the lake there are floating plants that have flowers blooming on them in spring.  The plants crowd around the shore line.

The picture below shows one of the other islands that is right next to Janitzio.

Most of the people who live on Janitzio are indigenous descent and are known as Purepecha (tarascans).  On the island they sell their handicrafts which is a variety of handmade textiles and artwork.  The people need to come ashore to get supplies and will load the boat up with crates of food and things that they wish to take home.

On the island is a 40-meter statue of Jose Maria Morelos.  He was a great hero of the Mexican independence.  You can climb inside the statue by way of staircase spiraling up inside.

As you can tell from this picture the island is rather vertical.  In fact I do not think that there is a flat piece of land other than at the docks.

If you live here - you will know your neighbors very well.

In fact you could reach out your window and shake hands with your next door neighbor in most places.

Dogs do not have much room on the ground so they get the roof tops and watch the activity of life on the ground.

The women work together fixing food.

The women work together to fix food that is sold on the streets.

This is the fish that is caught by the butterfly fishermen out of the lake.  It is very good and just the right size for one.  P.S. the hot sauce above is HOT.

These to scarfs were purchased on the island for the total price of 10.00 USD

 Hasta pronto
