Since the 1950's Ajijic has been considered the artistic centre of the Chapala Riviera. The artistic colony is comprised of both Mexicans and non-Mexicans, working in all sorts of media. Art is everywhere. The permanent art is on the walls, on the pavement in the plaza, carved in trees. Then the local galleries and stores, in hotels and restaurants. Exhibits on the street. Art is for sale.
At the present time (9/4/12) the plaza is having a whole art make over. Here is a picture that I took because it showed the man who designed the new art work for the plaza working with his children - teaching them his craft.( building blocks is a beginning )
Art is on the walls of buildings.
Art is on the doors of homes.
You cannot talk about Ajijic without mentioning the Posada. The Posada is a hotel and it is beautiful. Right on the lake. Over the years hundreds of celebrities from every walk of life have eaten meals there or stayed over night. Elizabeth Taylor, Charles Bronson and the list is endless. One guest even stayed there for two and a half years. Today the owners are lovely people and we know them rather well. This is the Posada hotel today.
Ajijic is a tourist-oriented oasis. There are so many hotels, restaurants, bars and shops that there are accommodations for everyone. The luxury Real de Chapala hotel is where we stayed on our first visit to Ajijic. The hotel is actually in a housing development called La Floresta that is described in another posting on this blog. Here are some pictures of the hotel
It was Christmas time and this was the tree in the lobby |
our room had it's own spa area. |
Our living room area in our room |
Do you see the black thing that is up on the wall - looks like a butterfly? That is placed over doorways of homes and on buildings when someone in the family dies. |
